So, I got the iPhone 15 Pro, and there was a lot of chatter online about the USB-C port being used to connect ethernet (and I’m guessing other accessories). Macrumors featured someone doing a gigabit speed test. I have a 1.5Gb internet connection, and a 2.5GbE USB-C ethernet dongle, so I thought I’d make a video (below) of a wired more-than-1Gb speed test. If you want to see faster, I could do a local test to a NAS (Comment below). I could also get a 10Gbe USB-C ethernet adapter, but they are expensive!

GoPro Hero 4 Black Edition vs iPhone 6s 4K 30 fps
I wanted to see which was better at shooting 4K Video. Below is the YouTube video, and the links to the source files for your own comparison.

First iPhone 4S Siri Television Ad
I could have sworn I saw another one, but I guess it was just an online ad. Anyways usually I would not care about posting this, but Apple nailed the uses for Siri in my opinion. Wow what a marketing machine.

Suave HD iPhone theme
I found this great iPhone theme thanks to my friend Andrew! It is made to work with the retina display, so it is very sharp. It’s is also one of the classiest themes I have seen. It reminds me of the realize theme. The cool thing is the creators of the theme as well as others online are creating more and more icons to try to accommodate for people’s different application usage. Head on over to the official site to download the themes as well as extras. I recommend you also install the Battery screen and SBSettings if you use that. They also have alternative icon packages for a lot of apps if the default one is not to your liking.
1.To install the theme download “Themes+Icons” on the bottom of the page.
2.Extract (on macs you can not use Archive utility at this time because it does not read the zip file correctly and will result in an error).
3. SSH into your iPhone (if you don’t know how to do that you can follow these directions: Windows|OS X) I would also recommend you change the default password which is alpine. To do that SSH into your iphone using Terminal and type passwd, it will prompt you for your current password, alpine, then ask you for a new password.
4.Copy the Suave HD.theme folder to “/Library/Themes/”
5.Launch Winterboard and select the Suave HD theme. The battery screen folder also goes into this folder. However the SBSettings theme goes into “/var/mobile/Library/SBSettings/Themes” and has to be activated by running SBSettings, clicking on more, going into SBSettings Theme and selecting “iSuave”
limera1n jailbreaks iOS 4.1
Today Geohot released his latest jailbreak which releases most iDevices into freedom land. It will jailbreak iPhone 3GS (Old bootrom only at this point) , iPod Touch 3G, iPad, iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4G on iOS 4.0, 4.1 and claims also to jailbreak future official releases. According to Engadget, this release has angered the Dev team. After reading the story I do understand why, however it’s still funny that there is jailbreak politics. At this point it is windows only, so either fire up Bootcamp/Parallels/vmware fusion/VirtualBox or use a pc. It uses the same way to jailbreak as back in the day by holding the power and home button to enter DFU mode. Anyways I already jailbroke my iphone 4 running 4.1. At this point the only complaints I have were that initially limera1n and Cydia had white icons, but after updating Cydia everything is back to normal. Now I can reinstall my paid applications in Cydia! Below is the link to the limera1n website.
Update: I saw a user that landed on my site from google searching on how to use Cydia on iOS4.1 after installing limera1n. I’m assuming (s)he couldn’t figure out how to install Cydia. To install Cydia after you jailbreak, open up limera1n and tap on Cydia, then tap the Install button on the top right of the screen.
How the iPhone 4 re-upped the ante
When the first iPhone came out, it changed the way the mobile phone industry was operating, all other companies scrambled to put something together that would be worthy to battle the iPhone. While some were successful (Google, maybe Nokia), other where not in my opinion (RIM/Blackberry). When I say that, I am not talking about sales, I am talking about a phone and operating system that are coherent.
Next we can all agree that the next two iPhones were just upgrades that were nothing too special other than at the time they were released (except for the 3G upgrade). So when the iPhone 4 came out, it had a new feature called Facetime. What is Facetime you ask? It is a video calling technology that Apple developed. You might think to yourself, who cares Nokia and Sony Ericsson have that that since around 2005. While that may be true, I’ve had the first Nokia phone that had a front facing camera, as well as many others, yet how many times did I use a video call in those three years? Exactly once (no joke), and I was sitting next to the person I was having the call with. We were just testing out the technology. As Felix Dennis mentions in his book How To Get Rich the key to being successful is not about having a great idea, it’s all about execution, and Apple executes second to none.
One of the really cool things about Facetime is that you don’t even need cellular reception to make a call (which makes video calls free all over the world!). Check out this video below of me giving directions to a friend while in the middle of the woods! We had no reception, yet we had wifi internet. While all other phones in the cabin (blackberries) were out of luck when it came to making phone calls, at least I could call people that have a Facetime device (at that time only the iPhone 4).

App of the day – Speed Test
We all use a speed test utility from time to time, to diagnose connectivity problems. I always use speedtest.net. They have had an iPhone app for a while now, but today they updated it to 2.0.1. Along with some tweaks to get it to work better with all iDevices including the iPhone 4, They have revamped the entire interface, making it retina display worthy. Actually I think this is the best looking app so far on the retina display. If you have an iPhone 4 and want to see a great graphical interface, and also want to be able to test your internet connection out, the app is free on the app store.
How to get your free iPhone 4 Case/Bumper
So as we all know apple announced it would give away free iPhone 4 cases/bumpers to help those affected by the antennagate. While I haven’t had any real problem with holding the iPhone 4 using the death grip, it’s still nice to get a free bumper out of it. I choose the black bumper as you can see below. I could not find the app in the Canadian Appstore, so I thought I would share how to get the app.
1.First open this link
2.Click on the View in iTunes button
3.Click on the Free App button in iTunes. This will download the application to your computer.
4.Once the application has downloaded, connect your phone and sync it, make sure you have Sync Apps check mark activated in the Apps tab in your iPhone page inside iTunes.
5.Open the application on your iPhone, and click Get Started.
6.Login with your iTunes account information.
7.Choose the case you like and click Select. (I picked the bumper FYI)
8.Make sure your address information is up-to-date and click place order, you will then be greeted with this Thank You page. That’s it you should now have a case/bumper on its way to you.
iPhone 4.0.1 and iPad 3.2.1 updates now live
As usual thanks to Engadget I am now aware that the iPhone 4.0.1 and the iPad 3.2.1 updates are available through iTunes. These updates don’t do much, just fix the formulas for displaying signal level, however a lot of my friends have been having problems with 4.0 so maybe this will fix things. If you haven’t upgraded already connect your iPhone/iPad to iTunes and click on the Check for update button. I guess they released this just in time for tomorrow’s press conference!
iPhone 4 Press Conference Friday July 16th, 2010
I was just reading the front page of Engadget when I saw they posted that Apple will be hosting a Press Conference on this Friday. Without even reading the article, this comes to mind, It’s clearly regarding the antenna problems, and secondly I think their might an apology and a recall.
Maybe it was Jeremy Clarkson’s statement that forced them to hold this conference!
